Overview

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, and regular scans are an important part of making sure both mother and baby are doing well. A pregnancy scan or sonography uses ultrasound waves to create images of the baby inside the womb and helps your doctor monitor the baby’s growth, development, position and overall well-being.

Different scans may be advised at different stages of pregnancy. An early pregnancy scan, often called a dating scan, is usually performed around 6–9 weeks to confirm the location of the pregnancy, check the baby’s heartbeat and estimate the gestational age. The NT scan, usually done between 11 and 13+6 weeks, is an important first-trimester screening scan. Around 18–22 weeks, the detailed anomaly scan helps examine the baby’s developing organs and body structures. As pregnancy progresses, growth scans and Doppler studies may be recommended to monitor the baby’s growth, blood flow, placenta and other important parameters.

The type and timing of your pregnancy scan depend on your stage of pregnancy, medical history and your doctor’s advice. These scans help your obstetrician follow your pregnancy closely and identify any concerns that may require further evaluation.

2D, 3D & 4D Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging has evolved from traditional 2D images to advanced 3D and 4D imaging. Each technology provides a different type of view and may be used depending on the stage of pregnancy and the purpose of the examination.

2D Ultrasound produces standard two-dimensional images and remains the foundation of medical pregnancy imaging. It is used to assess the baby’s growth, anatomy, heartbeat, position and other important pregnancy parameters.

3D Ultrasound creates three-dimensional images, providing a more detailed view of certain external features and structures. Depending on the baby’s position and other factors, it may provide clearer views of the baby’s face and other surface features.

4D Ultrasound is essentially 3D imaging in motion. It provides real-time moving images of the baby, allowing movements such as facial movements, hand movements and other activity to be viewed when conditions are suitable.

It is important to understand that 3D and 4D imaging do not replace medically indicated 2D ultrasound. The type of imaging used depends on what needs to be assessed and your doctor’s recommendation.
